This bright yellow felt hat with black ribbon hat band was utilized by the character Dick Tracy portrayed by actor Warren Beatty in the 1990 motion picture “Dick Tracy” starring Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, and Madonna. The interior of the hat has maker’s label stamped inside reading “Golden Coach, Dobbs, Genuine Fur Felt”. The hat has been hand distressed with fake bullet holes for use in an action sequence and is the signature style “Dick Tracy” hat Mr. Beatty wore throughout the entire film.
This hat was used in the sequence where Tracy arrives at the South Side Warehouse owned by Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino) after getting a tip off to his radio watch from Bugs Bailey (Michael J. Pollard). When Tracy arrives at the warehouse he finds the two villains “Pruneface” (R.G. Armstrong) and “Influence” (Henry Silva) preparing to encase Bailey in a crate of concrete to drop in the river. Tracy tricks the two mobsters by propping his signature yellow hat and coat up behind a crate for the villains to shoot at while he sneaks around the side to save Bugs. After the two mobsters open fire they discover Tracy’s ruse and the coat and hat with screen-matched bullet holes are clearly seen. The hat is in hand distressed condition as seen in the film and is accompanied by a signed letter of authenticity from the Property Master who worked on the production.
“Dick Tracy” was directed by Warren Beatty and featured a truly all-star cast including such actors/actresses as James Caan, Kathy Bates, Dick Van Dyke, and Charles Durning. The film won multiple Oscars in 1991 for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Makeup, and Best Music, Original Song as well as receiving numerous other nominations for Costume Design, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and one to Al Pacino for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
